Nethili meen (fish) is popular in the Indian diet. Well, I think I’d be safe in saying that it is quite popular, period. It is a versatile fish and can be cooked in a multitude of ways. But sometimes the best way is often the simplest way to cook and enjoy the flavours of the fish.
There is a general routine in The Tiffin Times household. Friday mornings or Saturday mornings are market days depending on who has the day off. And depending on which market we go to there is often a bag of select goodies along with the staples which forms the weeks’ meals. This week’s ‘goodie’ (which has admittedly become a staple) was nethili meen. A goodie because we were able to get an uber-fresh catch! The fish markets in Melbourne offer a great range of fresh seafood, though do make sure you visit your fishmongers first thing in the morning lest you lose out to other fish lovers.
There is no better way to enjoy a fresh catch of fish than with a simple fish fry (varuval). I would have to admit that nethili meen varuval is one of my all time favourite foods, that is, before I boarded the vegetarian bandwagon. And I say bandwagon with tongue-in-cheek!
Nethili meen varuval is quite easy to prepare and takes less than 10mins to cook and plate. These fish are so small and bones quite delicate that you don't need to worry pick out the bones.

Hi Keerthi,
I am looking to buy this anchovies to make fish fry but would you suggest any good Springvale or Dandenong shops where we get this ?
Thanks in advance !
Hi Ranjith,
Most good fishmongers in major shopping centres will sell these anchovies. However, our preferred places are Springvale & Dandenong.
In Dandenong, there are few fishmongers inside the Dandenong Market or in the Hub that is between Clow & Boyd Streets.
The fish markets within Springvale Shopping Centre, along both sides of Buckingham Ave are also great places to buy these anchovies and makes for a great for a day out shopping with the family (as soon as lockdown is lifted)!

Thanks Keerthi!
